My name is Phil Heritage and last year I was promoted to manage the engineer training department at Homeserve. My ambition was to deliver excellent training and qualifications for engineering and enable Homeserve to become an apprenticeship training provider. I did have management experience, but no formal training or accreditation.

I understood to grow the apprenticeship framework would require a lot of hard work, delegation, application writing, organisation and recruiting of staff. I needed to find solutions to overcome problems, streamline my processes and work methodically,” now I was out of my comfort zone”.

Through the support of my manager at my PDR we realised a professional qualification would support my career prospects and give Homeserve the confidence of having fully qualified staff managing their Engineering department. We are a Levy paying company and therefore I wanted to take the apprenticeship route.

While the whole team at GBS has been extremely helpful, Penny Guard, one of the directors at GBS is an inspiration, so hands-on, available, pro-active and supportive.

I and others in Homeserve placed on a Leadership and Management program level 5. We were introduced to GBS, a professional family run business with a history of delivering management apprenticeships to the industry. While the whole team at GBS has been extremely helpful, Penny Guard, one of the directors at GBS is an inspiration, so hands-on, available, pro-active and supportive. Penny’s commitment to give us the best possible journey to our apprenticeship has been outstanding.

I have grown in confidence, used and applied analysis models, such as SWOT, PESTAL,TQM, six Sigma. I’ve researched and broadened my knowledge of Homeserve’s procedures, policies, and governance. GBS provides good quality workbooks which support your research when completing the assignments, there are tips, website and clear direction, the GBS team are always there to help. I really enjoy the hands-on approach Alan gives to the lessons, his vast managerial experience is evident throughout the session and he’s walked the walk. I have now, with the support of Penny completed all the applications to become the main apprenticeship provider thanks to her help.
